The way we raise our children through different parenting styles and the positions of control that we take have a significant impact on the nature and development of our children. Research shows that there are four main categories of parenting styles, namely: authoritarian, neglectful, permissive and authoritative. The parenting styles relate to how much the parent expect from the child and how supportive the parent is of the child.
When you engage in authoritative parenting, your relationship with the child is reciprocal, responsive and high in bi-directional communication.
If you are neglectful in your parenting style, you are uninvolved with your child and are rejecting of him/her.
A permissive parenting style refers to being indulgent with your child and having very low control.
An authoritarian parenting style is controlling, power assertive and high in uni-directional communication.
